Can somebody please explain to me simply how to EV train and work out IV's?

Well FDOL it goes something like this....

Everytime a pokemon levels up certain stats will increase........

Basically say u have a Mewtwo and four attacks......

Say 2 special and 2 physical.........

The stats increase depends on the battle moved used during the current level b4 it gained the level...

Say u had 4 battles......in each battle u used more special than physical attacks or vice versa or evenly used....

Ure pokemon will may gain more stats in that region as u have used that move more than the other type..........

Say u used 10 specials and 2 physicals then when it levels the sp atk will increase by 2/3 sometimes 4.....

But the stat increase is also dictated by the pokemon nature........ as u can use all sp atk and gain only 2 stat increase and u use no physical atks and get an increase of 4/5 this is due to the nature of the pokemon...... E.G. Blaziken

If this doesn't help lmk!!!!

I'll make it easy for you to understand.

On top of it's base stats, a pokemon can have up to 127 more stat points through proper training. A stat is limited to a maximum of 63 extra points.

Whenever a pokemon levels up, it will level up according to it's base stat and also some extra points. How it determines this is through "effort values" (EVs for short). Every 4 EVs are equal to 1 "real" point, so if you have 16 EVs in attack, you'll have an increase of 4 attack points. However, this won't happen immediately. The extra points are gradually added to your stat until you hit level 100. So although you might've added 63 points to your attack stat, they won't all be factored in until you hit level 100.

The reason why a stat is limited to 63 extra points is because you can only put in a maximum of 255 EVs in a particular stat, which translates to 63.75 points. Since stats don't round up, it is stuck at 63.

How are EVs determined? Well, whenever you battle and defeat a pokemon, it will give you EV points. Each pokemon gives you a specific (or sometimes multiple) stats. For example, defeating a Geodude in battle will give you pokemon a EV point in defence, and defeating 4 geodudes will always give you one point in defence. Everyone who gained experience from the battle will get points, so using experience share will also give your pokemon EVs as well. There should be a list on gamefaqs that tells you which pokemon gives you what stat, so you can plan your EV training.

To speed up your EV training, you have 3 options. The first one you can use are drugs. Carbon, Zinc etc all give you EVs on a specific stat but will only increase it up to 100. Therefore, you should always feed your pokemon drugs before training. The second option is to use macho brace. Macho brace doubles the amount of EVs that you receive. The third option is to get your pokemon infected with PokeRus, which also doubles the amount of EVs that your pokemon gets. Macho brace and Pokerus both stack, so it's possible to get a lot of EVs this way.

Techniques on EV training require you to know what you want your pokemon to do. Giving your Special Sweeper increases in Attack and Defence aren't going to do much; it is better to put them in Special Attack and Speed. Also, by combining increases gained from natures and EVs, you can get some pretty insane increases in specific stats.

Thanks Kai...I think I get it now anyway but that looks almost identical to the info posted on serebii.net

Understatement. You need like a PhD in Pokemon just to play the damn game now lol
Jason
I'm pretty sure EVs were around since red/blue

ETA: Btw FDOL, you can use vitamins and all that to boost EVs so it's not completely done via battles. Each one will give 10 EVs and you can only gain 100 EVs from each one max. Can't remember what the limit was on the total you can use though.

Agreed. I got all the carts up to Crystal Version & then gave up when raising their stats & getting them to like you became even more complicated.
Half of those listed Pokemon I never heard of b4.
I think I stopped at #251 lmao.

i was appemting ev training for the second time last night, i was battling lv 3 zubat trying to advance my speed, and i thought this is ****ed im getting nowhere slowely my pokemon being on lv 56 making it hard to level up against little zubat i flew in search of high level pokemon that dominate in speed. my journy lead me to victory road in search of golbat. i enterd the cave and was welcomed by machokes and onix's then with my frustration growing i said **** it and traind against high level pokemon by random. then when i was abuout 300 exp points from leveiling up i went back to the cave with level 3 zubats and continued my training. when my pokemon finally leveled up his stats were raised by as followed
attack: 4
defence:4
spc attack: 5
spc defence: 5
speed: 8
i am curious to know if that was a successful ev training attempt?
plz LMK
Jason
Firstly, use Macho Brace if you aren't already. Secondly, hard to tell. When it gets to level 100, check out it's IVs and Nature to find what it would be if you hadn't EV trained. Then factor in the EVs you've gained. You could also do this before level 100 but it will be difficult to get a definitive answer.

Yeah, but he was trying to see how successful his EV training was as opposed to just checking IVs.

Actually, let's all just get Action Replays and save ourselves hours wink.gif
